In a significant move affecting public services, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has released a list of nearly 800 federal real estate leases it intends to cancel. This decision comes as part of a broader strategy initiated during the Trump administration aimed at reducing the size of government.

Among the offices targeted for closure are several Social Security Administration (SSA) locations across the United States. Reports indicate that closures are expected to take place this year, despite a new federal mandate requiring stricter identity verification measures designed to combat fraud. These requirements necessitate that millions of individuals seeking services must physically visit SSA offices, rather than access services via telephone.

The Associated Press gained access to an internal planning document from the General Services Administration (GSA), which oversees federal real estate. This document provides insight into the anticipated effective dates for approximately two-thirds of the proposed lease cancellations.
