Scorpion track and field season now underway

SEDONA, AZ — The varsity track and field season at Sedona Red Rock High School officially kicked off at Notre Dame Preparatory High School in Scottsdale on March 5. The team is gearing up for its first home meet scheduled for March 12.

Head Coach Sean Eicher acknowledged the challenges ahead after losing 17 seniors from last season. “Individual events may lead to more success this year,” he stated. The coaching staff is emphasizing weight training, increasing their sessions to two or three times per week to build both strength and speed. “We’re focusing on getting faster, which is our priority this year,” Eicher added.

Senior Sierra Williams, the team captain, aims to make her mark in long jump and sprints. Eicher noted her previous experience and competitive spirit. Last season, while battling an ankle injury, her performance fell short of her expectations, but she is determined to medal this year. At the Notre Dame meet, she showcased her talent, securing third place in long jump with a distance of 4.48 meters.

Junior Aubrie Doyle recorded a commendable fifth place in the 1,600 meters, clocking 6:11.20, while sophomore Avery Raczynski finished 16th in the 100-meter dash at 14.30 seconds. Eicher expressed confidence in Raczynski, highlighting her success in the 200 meters. “Her goal again this year should be top eight,” he stated, referring to Raczynski’s previous experience at state as a freshman.

With aspirations for improvement, Raczynski is determined to secure a gold medal in either the 100 or 200 meters this season. “I’ve already seen so much improvement in our smaller team,” she remarked, reflecting on the first week’s progress.

Doyle is setting ambitious goals for herself as well. She intends to qualify for state in the 800 and 1,600 meters, targeting a personal best of around 5:30 in the latter. “Many of us matched or nearly hit our personal records at the last meet,” she noted, optimistic about the team’s potential this season.

The Scorpions’ next home event, the Sedona Invitational, is set for April 5 at 9 a.m. as the team continues to build momentum for a promising season ahead.
