Uzan Shines with 25 Points as No. 2 Houston Dominates Arizona 72-64 for Big 12 Tournament Crown

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Houston Cougars secured the Big 12 Tournament title on Saturday night, overcoming injuries and previous setbacks. Playing without key player J’Wan Roberts, the second-ranked Cougars avenged last year’s championship game loss to Iowa State by defeating Arizona 72-64.
Emanuel Sharp, who earned tournament MVP honors, raised a championship belt triumphantly—though upside down, marking the Cougars’ triumphant moment on the podium. Milos Uzan was stellar, scoring 25 points, while Sharp contributed 17, helping Houston maintain its strong defensive reputation during critical moments of the game.
After taking a lead with Uzan’s strategic 3-pointer, the Cougars, now with a record of 30-4, displayed their hallmark defensive strength down the stretch. Sharp reflected on the team’s unity: “We did a great job of staying together,” emphasizing their commitment to each other under pressure.
Houston dominated throughout the tournament, easily advancing past Colorado and No. 17 BYU before triumphing over Arizona. Coach Kelvin Sampson praised his team’s resilience, stating, “We never panic… We believe in each other and get to work.”
Arizona, appearing in its first Big 12 tournament, showcased its potential. Caleb Love, Jaden Bradley, and KJ Lewis combined for 44 points, and Love expressed pride in the Wildcats’ journey through a challenging season. Coach Tommy Lloyd noted his team’s defensive capabilities, contradicting the notion that their style was solely offensive.
The Wildcats managed to take a brief lead, demonstrating tenacity against Houston’s famed defense. However, the Cougars’ strategy of turning defensive plays into scoring opportunities proved decisive as they surged ahead in the second half.
This victory marks Houston’s third conference tournament title in five years and solidifies their position as a top contender for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Roberts, who sustained an ankle injury earlier in the tournament, hopes to return for the NCAA play, while predictions suggest a high seed for both teams in the upcoming selection process.
