Sen. Mark Kelly Ditches Tesla: ‘I’m a Rolling Billboard for Government Disruption’ in Search of New Wheels

PHOENIX — U.S. Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona has decided to part ways with his Tesla electric vehicle, aligning himself with a growing number of public figures taking a stand against billionaire Elon Musk.
In a pointed statement on X (formerly Twitter), Kelly expressed his discontent, saying, “Every time I drive it, I feel like a rolling billboard for a man dismantling our government and hurting people. So Tesla, you’re fired!” This statement marks a notable escalation in tensions following Musk’s recent comments labeling Kelly a traitor for his support of Ukraine.
Kelly reflected that he had not anticipated his car choice would turn political. He cited Musk’s influence and actions, linking them to broader governmental disruptions. “It reminded me of just how much damage Elon Musk and Donald Trump are doing to our country,” he stated in a video.
Musk’s influence has been substantial since Trump took office, with the Department of Government Efficiency under scrutiny for its role in significant layoffs and halting federal funding. Protests at Tesla showrooms have erupted, with high-profile voices like Kelly urging others to boycott the company, leading to vandalism at some sites.
In an unusual display of loyalty, Trump criticized the boycotts as illegal and even used the White House driveway to showcase an apparent interest in purchasing a Tesla. Despite Tesla’s stock plummeting approximately 48% since January, the recent publicity surrounding these events saw a brief surge in stock values.
Kelly concluded his remarks with a clear stance: “What matters is doing the right thing. I think it’s time to get rid of it.”
