Police step back from leading large-scale search as volunteers continue to search for missing Peoria hiker

PEORIA, Ariz. — The search for 20-year-old Luke Wuennenberg enters its fifth day amid worsening weather conditions. A large group of over 100 volunteers assembled in northwest Peoria on Tuesday, intensifying efforts to locate the missing hiker.

Police confirmed that the official large-scale search led by law enforcement has concluded. However, community volunteers continue to scour the area for clues. “The goal is clear: we want to bring him home safe,” said Sunny Parker, an organizer for Arizona Foothills 911.

Wuennenberg went missing Saturday afternoon during a hike within a familiar desert mountain area between Peoria and Surprise. Despite previous treks on the same route, he did not return home. Initial searches by Peoria Police and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office were conducted on foot and by air but yielded no results.

Parker noted, “Our group has over 20,000 members, and we have people using ATVs, UTVs, horseback, and others walking door-to-door.” Volunteers have expanded their search efforts, checking empty houses and surrounding areas.

Concerns are mounting as inclement weather, including anticipated rainfall, is expected to complicate the search. “When it rains, water can rush through canals, posing additional risks,” Parker added. “We need to find him before the weather changes.” Wuennenberg’s phone is reportedly off, and his vehicle remains parked at North 137th Lane, where he began his hike.

Described as 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds, Wuennenberg was last seen wearing a black short-sleeve shirt and gray shorts. His family is particularly worried and believes he could be anywhere in the desert between Peoria and Surprise. Authorities have received reports of potential sightings, but none have been confirmed as credible.

If you see Luke Wuennenberg, please contact 911 immediately. The community remains vigilant in their search, united in hope for his safe return.
