Major Snowstorm Shuts Down SR 89A in Oak Creek Canyon and Northbound I-17

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has closed State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon due to hazardous winter weather conditions. The closure stretches from milepost 375 at Midgley Bridge to milepost 395 at the top of the switchbacks, initiated as a response to multiple vehicle slide-offs amid heavy snowfall. The notice was officially issued at 12:37 p.m. on Friday, March 7.
Northbound traffic is currently being redirected at Owenby Way, located on the north end of Uptown. ADOT cautions motorists about the ongoing heavy snowfall that complicates travel in the area.
In light of these adverse conditions, the department advises drivers to postpone travel plans until the storm subsides. There remains a possibility that additional highways may also face closures to ensure public safety.
For those who choose to drive during this winter storm, ADOT recommends being prepared for prolonged travel times. They urge travelers to monitor forecasts from the National Weather Service and to pack an emergency travel kit. A complete list of items suitable for a winter emergency kit can be found at azdot.gov/KnowSnow.
In the meantime, ADOT snowplows are operating continuously in impacted areas. Motorists should maintain a safe distance of four car lengths behind snowplows and refrain from passing them, allowing these vehicles to efficiently clear the road for safer travel.
For real-time updates on highway conditions, ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the AZ511 mobile app, or the toll-free number 511 are available resources.
