Local Lifeguard’s Vision: Shaping the Future of Our Twin Cities
Rolling fields of green grass, flowers, and towering pine trees were once everyday sights for Owen Roberts in Colorado Springs. Now, the 17-year-old calls Lake Havasu City his home after relocating three years ago.
Roberts has found a new community in Lake Havasu and currently works as a lifeguard for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. “I started last May,” said Roberts. “It’s a good environment, and I’ve been coming to the Aquatic Center since childhood.”
He underwent rigorous training to qualify for the role, including CPR, first aid, and life-saving techniques. “I’ve had to rescue one person since I started,” Roberts recounted. “In February, I helped a swimmer who was struggling. I blew my whistle, signaled for help, and used effective techniques to bring them to safety.”
The job has enabled Roberts to make numerous friends within the Havasu community. In addition to his duties as a lifeguard, Roberts is taking online courses through Lake Havasu High School.
“I’m probably going to stay in Havasu and go to MCC when I graduate,” Roberts stated. “After getting my associate’s degree, I might go to Phoenix to study sciences, possibly entering the medical field as a veterinarian.”
For now, Roberts remains a vigilant presence at the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center. Each day, he ensures the safety of hundreds of swimmers seeking relief from the region’s intense summer heat.
