Mayo Clinic expanding Phoenix campus in $1.9 billion investment

PHOENIX — The Mayo Clinic is set to undertake a significant expansion of its Phoenix campus, with a projected investment of $1.9 billion. The announcement, made on Monday, reveals that this ambitious project aligns with the clinic’s strategy dubbed Bold. Forward. Unbound.

Officials from the clinic highlight that this initiative aims to revolutionize healthcare through innovative practices. Mayor Kate Gallego expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Next-generation medical care is a reality in Phoenix.”

Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, the President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, emphasized a transformative vision. “We are blurring the lines between inpatient and outpatient care to support Category-of-One healthcare for our patients,” he said. This forward-thinking approach aims to elevate the patient and staff experience.

Dr. Richard J. Grayand, CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, echoed these sentiments. He asserted that the expansion would redefine clinical care, research, and education standards in the state. “This incredible investment will forever change the patient and staff experience in Arizona,” Gray remarked.

The expansion will introduce a 1.2-million-square-foot facility featuring multiple upgrades. Key developments include:

  • Construction of a new procedural building.
  • A five-story vertical and horizontal expansion of the Mayo Clinic Specialty Building.
  • Integration of advanced technology.
  • Creation of eleven new operating rooms and two new patient units, adding 48 beds.
  • An enhanced arrival experience for patients and visitors.

Mayor Gallego believes this initiative positions Phoenix as a frontrunner in biosciences and healthcare innovation. “It means more cures, advanced treatments, and a superior quality of care experience for patients locally, nationally, and globally,” she stated.

The expansion is set to commence this year and is expected to be completed by 2031.
