75-Year-Old Phoenix Landmark Shifts to New Owners: A Historic Era Comes to a Close

PHOENIX — After 75 years of operation, Durant’s Steakhouse has been acquired by new owners, signaling a significant change for the iconic establishment. The brothers Mike and Jeffrey Mastro, known for their work at Dominick’s Steakhouse, Steak 44, and Ocean 44, are the new proprietors.
“It’s a privilege and honor to acquire the restaurant and to preserve its history while enhancing its future for generations to come,” Jeff Mastro expressed regarding the transition.
Founded in 1950, Durant’s has a storied legacy, frequently hosting celebrities, politicians, and notable athletes. Arizona historian Marshall Shore recalls, “John Wayne was known to frequent here,” emphasizing the restaurant’s deep connections to Hollywood and history.
Durant’s has also held a place in popular lore for its rumored mafia ties. Shore remarked that the original owner, Jack Durant, claimed plans for the murder of journalist Don Bowles were hatched within the restaurant’s walls.
Frequent patrons often bypassed the front entrance, favoring the back door that led directly through the kitchen. “There’s certainly something special about walking in through the kitchen that’s a huge part of the charm,” said longtime customer Matt Wszalek.
The previous family owners expressed the emotional weight of selling. Jack McElroy Jr., who operated Durant’s for decades, shared, “It’s the end of an era.” With no family members ready to take over the business, he sought to ensure the restaurant’s continuity and legacy.
“My family and I are thrilled with the acquisition and intend to bring a renaissance to this iconic steakhouse,” Mike Mastro added, hinting at future enhancements while preserving its essence. Plans for renovations are underway, focusing on improving the kitchen while maintaining the restaurant’s cherished ambiance.
Wszalek noted the community’s keen interest in retaining the restaurant’s charm during renovations. “I have to imagine they will keep a lot of the charm. I think the neighborhood would be disappointed if they didn’t,” he stated.
Durant’s holds a special place in pop culture as well, having been featured in the 2016 film “Durant’s Never Closes.” The restaurant plans to keep its name intact and is expected to reopen by September.
