Vote yes on Tucson's Prop 414 if protecting our community’s safety is a priority

Tucson resident and retired ATF agent Rebecca Fernandez is urging voters to support Tucson’s Proposition 414, emphasizing the importance of community safety. She believes that advancing investments in technology and safety strategies funded through this proposition could significantly reduce gun violence in the area.

With over 13 years of experience as a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and a decade in local law enforcement in the Pacific Northwest, Fernandez articulates the challenges faced by law enforcement during critical incidents. “Rushing to a crime scene with limited information can be incredibly concerning,” she states. Recent national events highlight the necessity of advanced equipment and technology to accurately identify suspects and coordinate responses among agencies, minimizing risk to innocent bystanders.

Fernandez points out that Tucson has piloted innovative strategies utilizing technology to improve response times and situational awareness. The use of photograph and video evidence transmitted quickly from crime scenes enables officers to gain immediate insights, countering the limitations of traditional eyewitness accounts. “This approach is not about 24-hour surveillance but rather a responsive action to significant incidents,” she clarifies.

Moreover, enhanced data collection can identify crime patterns and disrupt networks involved in gun trafficking and other violent activities. Proposition 414 also allocates funding for violence-interruption programs aimed at providing at-risk youth with meaningful employment opportunities. Fernandez argues that addressing the root causes of crime is essential for long-term community safety.

“We know which young people are most vulnerable,” she asserts. “Investing in their futures through Proposition 414 is not just wise; it’s necessary.” Fernandez calls for immediate action, urging the community to support the proposition and accelerate progress in enhancing public safety.
