Police station opens, boasting new gadgets

Police Chief Mark Goodman and Mayor Nancy Smith celebrated the grand opening of the Maricopa Police Department’s new facility on July 27, 2024. The ribbon was cut at the 32,200-square-foot police station located at 18135 N. Park Plaza, which is more than double the size of the previous headquarters.

Mayor Nancy Smith addressed the crowd, noting the rapid development since the city’s first police chief was hired 15 years ago. She touted the new facility as “exceptional” and proudly mentioned that it was built debt-free.

The previous station, built in 2013, will now serve dual purposes. One half will be converted into a theater, while the other half will be an incubator space for new businesses.

MPD Capt. Stephen Judd reflected on the department’s humble beginnings, recalling that they once operated from construction trailers in 2007. The new station marks a significant upgrade from those early days.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, residents toured the new building, guided by police volunteers. One of the highlights was the new on-site force simulator, a luxury previously housed offsite at Central Arizona College.

The community also got a glimpse of the new VIRTRA simulator, designed to mentally prepare officers for use-of-force scenarios. According to Police Chief Goodman, the simulator’s new location offers greater flexibility for training and evaluations.

Another significant addition to the station is the sallyport, a climate-controlled area where officers can conduct in-depth vehicle searches. This facility enhances the department’s ability to gather evidence meticulously.

The official move-in of police staff is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. However, 911 dispatchers will have to wait until at least September to shift to the new headquarters due to delays in equipment delivery.

Once the transition is complete, the new state-of-the-art dispatch stations will consolidate various departmental functions under one roof. This marks a significant milestone for the Maricopa Police Department, enhancing its ability to serve the community.
