Neighbors Unite to Help Former Marine Rise from Ashes After Devastating House Fire

CHANDLER, Ariz. — A tragic fire on February 5 devastated the home of 71-year-old David Griggs, leaving him with second-degree burns and a heart-wrenching loss. The flames consumed his residence, located by West Elliot Road and North Alma School Road, where Griggs had lived for over 22 years.
Witnesses recalled the fire’s intensity. “Flames higher than my two-story house,” said Dee Lipps, a neighbor. “30 feet in the air.” Griggs, desperate to check on his dog, sustained injuries while trying to rescue her from the inferno.
Griggs’ dog survived, but the fire rendered his home a total loss. With no health or home insurance to lean on, the Marine veteran faced an uncertain future. Yet, the local community responded with remarkable solidarity.
A gathering of neighbors unfolded last Saturday, where discussions centered on supporting Griggs in his time of need. “We are caring people, and if somebody’s down, it’s on the rest of us to step up,” Lipps stated. Donations from local businesses and individuals have already begun pouring in, aiming to aid in the rebuilding process.
“It’s heartwarming to see the community come together,” neighbor Lindsey Day remarked. “Who wants to wake up knowing that everything is gone? We want to show Griggs that there’s still hope.”
Griggs expressed his astonishment at the outpouring of support, stating, “I’ve never expected anything like this at all. It’s wonderful.” The collective effort from friends, neighbors, and even strangers provided a flicker of hope amid his devastation.
For those who wish to assist Griggs in his recovery, a GoFundMe page has been established to help cover rebuilding costs and medical expenses.
