Are You Actually Receiving Stem Cells?

Many patients report having received “stem cells” during their treatments, but an examination of their procedures often reveals significant misunderstandings about what this entails. The correct terminology, Human Cellular Tissue Product (HCT), should be clarified to avoid confusion, as the term “stem cells” is commonly recognized but not always accurate.
Understanding what HCT is not is crucial. For instance, if a patient underwent a procedure where their blood was drawn, centrifuged, and then the remaining plasma was injected back, they did not receive stem cells. This process, known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), concentrates platelets that are rich in growth factors. Though PRP supports healing, its capacity to regenerate tissues such as cartilage is limited, especially as platelet levels decline with age.
It’s essential for patients to realize that receiving PRP alone does not equate to obtaining stem cells. This misperception can lead to unrealistic expectations about the outcomes of their treatments. In many cases, PRP is combined with HCT injections to enhance regenerative potential.
The FDA’s shift in terminology from “stem cells” to “HCT” reflects the complexity of modern regenerative treatments. HCT products may contain actual stem cells alongside other cellular components, making the analogy of a margarita containing tequila applicable. Just as a margarita is not purely tequila, HCT isn’t solely made up of stem cells; it may include various additional extracellular products.
In practice, the cells used in HCT at some clinics are sourced from ethically regulated donations. For example, cells may come from a mother who underwent a Cesarean section and donated the umbilical cord and placenta. These donations are processed by FDA-regulated tissue banks, ensuring the products are safe and viable, stored at extremely low temperatures and used shortly after delivery.
