LeBron James sits out All-Star Game, ending 20-year streak of starts

SAN FRANCISCO — LeBron James will sit out this year’s All-Star Game, marking a significant moment in his illustrious career. This absence marks the first instance in his 21-year journey that he has been selected but will not participate in the league’s midseason showcase.

The Los Angeles Lakers star cited foot and ankle discomfort as the reason for his withdrawal, a recurring issue he has managed throughout several seasons. Scheduled to compete on Team Shaq, drafted by Shaquille O’Neal, James announced his decision approximately 90 minutes before the game was set to start.

Having made his All-Star debut in 2005, Sunday would have marked his 21st appearance. He holds records for the most consecutive All-Star starts and overall selections, solidifying his legacy in the sport.

Following his decision, James indicated plans to return to Los Angeles on Sunday night, with rehabilitation set to resume the following day. “No vacation for me,” he remarked, underscoring his commitment despite the injury.

Looking ahead, James expressed optimism about playing when the Lakers resume their schedule against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday. This game is particularly notable as it was rescheduled due to wildfires impacting the Los Angeles area. “I hope to be available on Wednesday,” James affirmed, aiming to return to the court soon.
