High Country Braces for Major Rain and Snow Deluge

Snowfall in the High Country and rain across the Valley serve as reminders that spring is still a way off in Arizona.
PHOENIX — Arizona is experiencing a late winter weather event, with a Weather Impact Alert issued for Friday. Rain is expected in the Valley, while the High Country anticipates snowfall.
A branch of the Pacific storm track is set to move through the state, bringing rain to central Arizona by late Thursday night. The main rain band will hit Friday morning, with snow levels starting around 7,000 feet and dropping to as low as 5,500 feet by nightfall.
This storm is not expected to alleviate the drought situation significantly. However, it may lead to slick road conditions and provide much-needed moisture to the unusually dry desert vegetation this winter.
High pressure will take hold over the weekend, resulting in drier conditions and a warm-up in temperatures.
Residents are advised to don their rain gear and winter boots as rain and snow are poised to continue through Friday morning. Flagstaff may even see thunderstorms in the afternoon, so keep an eye on weather updates if heading out.
Lighter rain and snow are expected to persist along a cold front, with snow levels dropping to about 6,500 feet. This afternoon, scattered showers may occur, and heavy snow is possible above 6,000 to 6,500 feet, potentially creating low visibility.
Flagstaff is already reporting significant snow, while the Valley has begun to see light sprinkles. Meteorologists warn that uncertainty remains regarding total snowfall amounts due to the storm’s subtropical origins. Travelers are advised to check road conditions and carry a winter safety kit.
