Fire danger high on Saturday in Kingman and surrounding areas

The moisture from recent storms in the Kingman area is rapidly decreasing, leading to potentially dangerous conditions. Strong winds expected on Saturday further heighten the risk of wildfires.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Las Vegas has issued a red flag warning for Saturday, lasting from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. This warning covers most of Mohave County, with the exception of areas near the Colorado River. Locales such as Kingman, Golden Valley, Dolan Spring, Hualapai Mountain, Meadview, Peach Springs, and the Arizona Strip south of Highway 93 are listed as having “critical fire conditions” from late Saturday morning.

The NWS forecast predicts 10 to 15 percent humidity levels throughout the region. Additionally, south to southwest winds are expected to blow at 15 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. Fires starting under these conditions are likely to spread quickly.

“Fire danger will increase as significant dry air will be entrenched over the region,” stated NWS in its Area Forecast Discussion on weather.gov. The Arizona Strip is particularly at risk due to winds exceeding 20 mph combined with low humidity and recent fire incidents. Southern Mohave County will also face elevated risks despite slightly lower wind speeds, mostly because of dry conditions and high recreational activity over the weekend.

While fire risks remain high, temperatures are expected to be slightly lower. Saturday will see a high of 100 degrees.

Sunday’s forecast indicates a high of 98 degrees, with winds picking up from 9-14 mph in the morning to 15-20 mph in the afternoon. High temperatures will hover around the century mark for the upcoming week, with 99 degrees on Monday, 101 on Tuesday, and 103 for both Wednesday and Thursday.
