Tempe’s Music Community Reels From Tragic Loss of Rising Star in Car Accident
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Maple-Ash Neighborhood is urging city officials to enhance safety measures at the intersection of Tenth Street and Maple Avenue following the tragic death of local singer Melody Mason, 35, who was struck by a vehicle while riding her bike.
Mason, known for her vibrant performances around Tempe, was beloved by many. Her partner, Travis Furnald, described her as a “sunflower,” someone who embodied warmth and affection. “She connected dots,” Furnald said, emphasizing her ability to create bonds with those around her.
According to Tempe Police, Mason was riding her electric bike when she intersected the path of a car that lacked a stop sign, leading to the collision. She succumbed to her injuries shortly after being taken to the hospital.
In the wake of her passing, friends and community members have placed flowers and candles at the site of the accident. Signs are posted, advocating for critical safety enhancements, such as a roundabout or a four-way stop, to prevent further tragedies.
“We are losing important members of our community due to negligence in traffic safety,” Furnald lamented. Local residents have long sought changes at this intersection, noting that there have been four reported accidents there since 2011.
Furnald expressed gratitude for the community’s response, highlighting Mason’s deep-seated care for others. “I want the loudness of Melody to shine, reflecting her spirit and love,” he said.
A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to assist with memorial expenses, encouraging the public to contribute in honor of Mason’s legacy.
