A man detained at Pima County Jail has died following an altercation with another inmate, as confirmed by officials. Emmanuel Ramirez, 41, was involved in the incident early Saturday and was subsequently transported to a local hospital.
According to a spokesperson from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Ramirez was found injured around 2:50 a.m. in the Detox Unit of the jail. He was admitted for further medical care but succumbed to his injuries later that same day.
The specifics of Ramirez’s injuries and the cause of death have not been disclosed. Additionally, the identity of the other inmate involved in the confrontation remains unknown. The Homicide Unit of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Prior to this altercation, Ramirez had been booked into the Adult Detention Center just a day earlier due to multiple warrants and a charge related to drug paraphernalia. His family has been informed of his death.
Court documents reveal that Ramirez had a history of interactions with Tucson police, amassing at least 20 citations for various minor offenses since July 2023. These offenses included repeated instances of trespassing, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failing to appear in court, resulting in warrants issued against him. A court hearing regarding his case was scheduled for the following Friday.
