Rep. Weninger Introduces Bill To Create Dedicated Funding For DBacks’ Stadium

By Daniel Stefanski |

An Arizona lawmaker has taken a significant step toward addressing funding concerns for Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Last week, State Representative Jeff Weninger introduced HB 2704, aiming to establish a dedicated funding source for the stadium’s maintenance and enhancements as the lease with the Diamondbacks is set to expire in 2027.

Weninger, who chairs the House Commerce Committee, emphasized the importance of the Diamondbacks to Arizona’s identity and economy. “This bill is a proactive measure to ensure the Diamondbacks remain in Arizona, a state that has embraced them for years,” he stated. With the recent loss of the Coyotes, he noted the urgency in supporting local teams and sustaining their venues.

The proposal outlines a plan to recover sales and income taxes generated from activities at Chase Field, directing these funds specifically toward its upkeep. This approach resembles the funding strategy utilized by the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority for State Farm Stadium, where the Arizona Cardinals play. Additionally, it’s noted that the Diamondbacks will cover the majority of the financial requirements for necessary repairs.

Support for the legislation extends to Derrick Hall, the President and CEO of the Diamondbacks. In a statement, Hall expressed enthusiasm surrounding the bill, praising the collaboration involved in this public-private initiative. He emphasized the ballpark’s legacy of creating memorable experiences for fans over the past 27 years and highlighted the team’s commitment to investing hundreds of millions to enhance the venue without introducing new taxes.

As discussions progress in the Arizona Legislature, the focus remains on securing a sustainable future for Chase Field and the beloved baseball team that calls it home.
