SHOCKING FOOTAGE: Police Use Taser on Man Inside Maricopa Hospital
Maricopa Police Department has released body camera footage capturing an incident involving a man named Todd Borton at Exceptional Community Hospital on January 19, 2024. This occurred approximately two hours after Borton allegedly threatened his roommate and the responding officers.
At the time, 55-year-old Borton returned home intoxicated, forcefully banging on the door before assaulting his roommate. As tensions escalated, Borton reportedly threatened to kill the roommate and caused over $1,100 in property damage by breaking furniture. In response, his roommate deployed mace before police arrived.
Officers Adam Abel and Nathan Peterson discovered Borton lying facedown in a bloodied living room when they arrived. The scene showed significant damage, including blood on the walls and floors, presumably from a shattered glass table. Borton displayed aggressive behavior, verbally assaulting the officers before a struggle resulted in his custody.
After being sedated by paramedics, Borton was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Approximately two hours later, Officer William Wetherell arrived at the hospital to assist. During this time, hospital staff requested Borton be uncuffed for a urine sample. However, he declined to comply and began issuing threats towards Wetherell.
Wetherell documented in his report that Borton tensed up and attempted to grab his wrist. In response, the officer deployed his taser at close range, leaving the probes attached until it was deemed safe to remove them. During the activation process, Wetherell accidentally triggered the taser again but promptly deactivated it and removed the wires.
Following the incident, Borton was cleared from the hospital and transferred to Pinal County Jail. Thirty-nine days later, he accepted a plea deal for charges related to resisting arrest with physical force in Pinal County Superior Court.
