Mesa School Board Decides to Protect Elementary Music Classes as Layoffs Loom

MESA, Ariz. — The Mesa School Board made a significant decision to maintain music classes for elementary students for the upcoming year. In a unanimous vote, the board allocated an additional $1.3 million from the Carry Forward Fund to preserve these essential programs, including general music for fourth to sixth graders.
However, this funding decision is viewed as a temporary solution to a more extensive financial challenge. District officials indicate a need for a comprehensive review in the following year. Plans are in motion to assemble a team comprising parents, teachers, and district leaders to address funding issues for the 2026-2027 school year.
In a related move, the board approved a workforce reduction aimed at the 2025-2026 school year. The specifics regarding the number of jobs affected and the exact departments facing cuts remain uncertain. While the district has confirmed the elimination of 147 district-level positions, details regarding school-level job losses are still pending.
The need for reductions arises from ongoing declines in student enrollment. Projections show the district may lose approximately 1,800 students next year, resulting in a potential $18 million decrease in funding.
Further information about the layoffs will be disclosed at the next school board meeting scheduled for February 11.
