Arizona GOP Congressmen Stand United for Born-Alive Legislation
By Matthew Holloway |
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, known as H.R. 21, passed in the Republican-dominated U.S. House of Representatives last week, with Arizona’s Republican lawmakers voting unanimously for the measure. In contrast, two out of three Arizona Democrats opposed the bill, while Rep. Raúl Grijalva abstained from voting.
This legislative move has received praise from Arizona’s Republican congressional delegation and the Trump administration. Congressman Andy Biggs, who has declared his candidacy for Arizona Governor, criticized Democrats on X, saying, “204 Democrats refuse to protect babies who survive an attempted murder. Republicans are pro-life, pro-woman, and pro-family.”
Congressman Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ-08) also expressed support for the bill via social media, stating, “The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act supports basic human rights. Denying life-saving care to a child who survives an abortion is tantamount to denying them the medical protection afforded to all newborns. This is a life-and-death issue.”
The White House echoed these sentiments, reaffirming President Trump’s 2020 Executive Order that emphasizes the dignity and worth of every newborn. They stated, “A baby that survives an abortion should be treated just like any other child. H.R. 21 aims to ensure equality in the value of life, and if presented in its current form, the President’s advisors would recommend signing it into law.”
Despite its passage in the House, the bill has met obstacles in the Senate. Although the GOP holds a majority with 53 votes, a 60-vote threshold is necessary to terminate debate and move forward. The attempt to push the bill through Congress coincides with the March for Life event in Washington, D.C., marking the 52nd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision.
