Community members rally against possible mass deportations at Phoenix intersection

Phoenix police reported a significant protest at the intersection of 75th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard on Sunday evening. The gathering began around 5 p.m., drawing attention to ongoing concerns about mass deportations and shifting immigration policies.

Demonstrators held Mexican flags and signs expressing their opposition to mass deportations, sparked by recent actions from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to ICE, the agency conducted a total of 956 arrests on Sunday, following a previous count of 286 arrests on Saturday. The Associated Press noted an average of 311 arrests per day by ICE for the last fiscal year, which concluded on September 30.

Fear remains palpable within the community, reflecting broader unease over potential immigration enforcement, despite a lack of concrete reports regarding ICE raids or intensified Border Patrol activity in the Valley.

Police temporarily closed the intersection due to unrelated disturbances, including drag racing and the setting off of fireworks. After a brief intervention, officers reopened the area as tensions eased.
