Arizona Cardinals Training Camp Notebook: Day 2

With practice open to the public, Cardinals fans got their first look at Arizona’s high-powered offense.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The second day of Arizona Cardinals Training Camp allowed fans to witness the team’s efforts at State Farm Stadium. Head coach Jonathan Gannon, now in his second year, praised the players’ retention since OTAs and noted the team’s attention to detail. These are the highlights from Thursday’s practice in Glendale:

1. The connection between quarterback Kyler Murray and center Hjalte Froholdt is strengthening

This training camp marks the first full offseason Murray and Froholdt have together. Murray’s recovery from ACL surgery limited their time on the field last year. Eight regular-season games later, their improved communication stands to benefit the offense.

“They know what each other is thinking,” Gannon explained. “They have a really good relationship… they’re very comfortable with one another.”

2. Details matter and every second counts

Gannon emphasizes efficiency in practice. From script markings to field movements and drill structures, everything is optimized to make the most of their limited practice time.

“I’m a believer in the details matter… They have to maximize those reps. They’re gold,” Gannon said.

3. Roster discussions are ongoing

Deciding on the 53-man roster isn’t straightforward. Positions like backup quarterback see fierce competition between Clayton Tune and Desmond Ridder. Gannon and General Manager Monti Ossenfort navigate these complexities continually.

“A lot of those decisions are made not just with each group, it’s the entire team. We’re always going to make what we think is the best decision for the team,” said Gannon.

4. Enthusiastic approach to learning

Rookie Darius Robinson’s preparation habits have impressed. His focus on studying his playbook mirrors his academic achievements. Robinson earned a master’s degree in education, emphasizing positive coaching.

“I made sure I watched 10 clips of [Cardinals] games last year… to be ready for fall camp,” Robinson said.

5. A connected team is a dangerous team

Murray and several key players have maintained their health throughout the offseason. Top targets like Marvin Harrison Junior and Trey McBride have been part of Murray’s efforts to foster team unity through organized trips and training sessions.

“They’ll go to dinner together, have a little fun together, but put in the work together too,” said Gannon. Murray’s goal for the season is ambitious; he aims to win the Super Bowl, a leap from their four-win season in 2023. Given Arizona’s recent history of turnaround seasons, this isn’t entirely implausible.

The Cardinals host the New Orleans Saints for their first preseason game on August 10. The regular season opener is against Buffalo on September 8.
