SOCSD Hosts Engaging Info Night for ELL Families
The Sedona-Oak Creek School District is set to host an information night focused on supporting families of English Language Learners (ELL) on Monday, January 27, at 6 p.m. The event will take place at Sedona Red Rock High School.
“The objective of ELL Parent Night is to engage with families to strengthen our relationships and provide communication about educational rights, program resources, and intended progress for their students,” stated SRRHS Principal Heather Isom. Angela Reyes, an English Language Development teacher, will provide insightful presentations and facilitate a Q&A session addressing crucial topics including student attendance, compensatory instruction, and tutoring options.
Currently, about 27% of the 706 students in the district qualify for English Language Development services. Notably, West Sedona School has 99 eligible students, while at Sedona Red Rock High School, there are 93.
Isom highlighted that the school will conduct similar events at the beginning of each semester. Additionally, starting February 3 at 5 p.m., the district will reintroduce free English language classes for SOCSD parents, which previously attracted 25 to 30 attendees consistently.
The district is actively seeking feedback from ELL families to better tailor educational resources to their needs. A questionnaire will be distributed during the upcoming informational session.
