MPD cadets take home 5 awards

Maricopa Police cadets competed fiercely at the 2025 Chandler Tactical Competition for Cadet and Explorer posts, showcasing impressive law enforcement skills over the weekend. They faced off against larger teams from states such as California, Florida, and Arizona’s own Phoenix, securing notable placements in various tactical challenges.

During the event, the Maricopa cadets earned first and second place in simulated shooting competitions and clinched the top spot in tactical hatchet throwing. Additionally, they placed third in handling a vehicle assault scenario and in a five-man hostage rescue drill. Last year, they garnered second, third, and fifth place awards, illustrating a marked improvement in performance.

The Maricopa Police Cadet Program, according to MPD Detective Kevin McCullar, aims to educate young individuals about the daily responsibilities of law enforcement officers. The program welcomes high school students aged 14 and up, requiring them to sign a contract to uphold good citizenship and maintain satisfactory academic performance.

McCullar highlighted the program’s role in supporting youth facing challenges such as peer pressure and substance use. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards, stating, “You’re responsible for your behavior even when you’re not representing the cadets.”

Despite its benefits, the program currently faces funding limitations, restricting enrollment to just 14 or 15 students. Costs associated with the program are covered by the Maricopa Police Foundation, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder participation. McCullar expressed a commitment to providing opportunities for all interested youths, emphasizing that “This is their opportunity to participate in a program that’s free.”
