Arizona Democrats reconvened at the state legislature last week, marking the start of the 57th Regular Session with fewer members than in the previous year. Despite losing seats in both chambers during the November 2024 General Election, they expressed enthusiasm for the tasks ahead, aiming to collaborate with Governor Katie Hobbs amidst a divided government.

The Arizona Senate Democrats Caucus announced on X, “Today the 57th Legislature kicks-off and Democrats have set a bold agenda to make Arizona more affordable, invest in public education, secure our water future, keep government out of our private lives, and protect our right to vote.”

In her remarks, State Representative Consuelo Hernandez expressed gratitude for her re-election, stating, “Honored to be sworn in for my second term. I commit to fighting to help improve our community.”

House Democrat Leader Oscar De Los Santos emphasized a focus on working families, asserting, “It is time to put working families first. That is why we will make the government work for you and not the special interests.”

State Senator Eva Diaz committed to advocating for effective public education and affordable healthcare, noting the importance of defending vulnerable communities and working-class families. This sentiment was echoed by Senator Analise Ortiz, who highlighted her dedication to affordable housing, fair wages, and fully-funded public schools.

Representative Kevin Volk shared his gratitude following his swearing-in as State Representative for District 17, appreciating the trust placed in him by voters.

While Democrats are optimistic this session, they will face challenges in a legislature predominantly led by Republicans. This creates a landscape where negotiations—especially over critical budgetary issues—will be largely in the hands of their opposition. Nonetheless, Democrats plan to support Governor Hobbs as best they can, possibly setting the stage for a more influential role in the next election cycle.
