Az Governor Hobbs Declares: ‘The Arizona Promise is My Personal Commitment’

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs delivered her “State of the State” address on Monday, marking the commencement of the 57th Legislature’s First Regular Session. She acknowledged the land’s historical ties to the O’Odham and Piipaash peoples of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Gila River Indian Community.

In her speech, Hobbs expressed solidarity with Californians grappling with wildfires, while commending Arizona firefighters assisting in the relief efforts. She welcomed both new and veteran legislators, recognizing their commitment to public service and the honor attached to representing the state.

The Governor reflected on Arizona’s legacy, attributing its vibrant culture and economy to pioneering figures, including the Huhugam, who developed water systems, and contemporary leaders dedicated to water policy. She highlighted individual heroism, citing Felicia Siyuja of the Havasupai Tribal Council, who provided shelter to over 100 tourists during devastating floods in Supai Village last summer.

Hobbs underscored Arizona’s promise: a place where opportunities abound for everyone—from entrepreneurs to families. However, she acknowledged that for many, this promise has waned amid increasing living costs and political distractions. Stressing the importance of hard work, she articulated goals for restoring the Arizona Promise, including accessible healthcare, affordable housing, and stability for all families, including immigrants contributing to their communities.

She shared her personal journey, emphasizing her connection to Arizona and a commitment to fighting for its residents. Addressing the scarcity of affordable housing, Hobbs detailed the impact of real estate speculation and high prices, sharing the story of Maria Magdalena Contreras, a medication technician who secured her home through state assistance.

The Governor vowed to enhance affordable housing measures, extend tax credits for low-income housing, tackle the vacation rental market’s impact, and cut unnecessary regulations. She asserted the necessity of collaborative efforts to end homelessness among veterans, unveiling plans for a “Homes for Heroes Fund.”

Another significant concern for Arizonans is childcare affordability. Hobbs revealed that many families face overwhelming costs, equating annual childcare expenses to college tuition. To address this, she proposed the Working Families Child Care Act to significantly reduce costs.

The Governor also touted economic opportunities arising from Arizona’s semiconductor industry, announcing a landmark investment for research and development facilities—an initiative expected to bolster job creation and secure Arizona’s position within the sector. She noted impressive employment figures and the state’s growth as a manufacturing powerhouse.

However, Hobbs emphasized the importance of small businesses and community-based entrepreneurship, citing individuals like Alexa Rodriguez, who benefited from support programs that helped her launch a successful online boutique.
