Republicans have solidified their control over the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) with the swearing-in of new commissioners. On Monday, Lea Márquez Peterson returned to office while Rachel Walden and Rene Lopez began their inaugural terms. This new lineup gives the Republican Party all five positions within the agency.

In a significant move, the newly constituted commission appointed Kevin Thompson as chairman and Nick Myers as the vice chair, marking what appears to be the first instance of a vice chair position in ACC history. Thompson expressed eagerness to lead, stating he aims to enhance the agency’s efficiency and responsiveness to public needs while honoring the trust placed in them by voters.

Peterson celebrated her return to the commission, thanking Chief Justice Timmer for administering her oath. She conveyed her excitement about collaborating with her fellow commissioners, including Myers and Thompson. Myers emphasized the historical nature of their roles, highlighting the importance of their appointments in shaping the future of the ACC.

Rachel Walden also expressed gratitude, acknowledging the efforts of the Commission staff and conveying her honor in serving the people of Arizona. All five commissioners conveyed their commitment to advancing the agency’s initiatives over the next two years, ambitious even amid a divided state government.

Reflecting on their goals, Thompson articulated a vision for a thriving workplace culture at the ACC, stating his desire for it to be an environment that attracts top talent. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring Arizona continues to flourish for future generations.
