Maricopa Illuminates the Night with Festive 2nd Annual Menorah Lighting

Rabbi Mendy Deitsch celebrated the sixth night of Hanukkah by lighting a large community menorah at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center on December 14, 2023. This event, hosted by the Chabad of the East Valley, marks the group’s second annual menorah lighting in Maricopa.
Linda Sylvester reflected on her childhood memories of Hanukkah, emphasizing the importance of lighting the menorah with family. “Participating as a child and saying the blessing over the candles was a big deal,” she recalled, recalling her upbringing in Queens, New York. She and her husband, Dave, attended the event to share this tradition with their community.
“It’s important to celebrate Hanukkah in a community setting because it helps others understand the significance of the holiday,” Sylvester stated. Rabbi Deitsch echoed this sentiment, noting the outreach efforts his organization has undertaken throughout the Phoenix metro area. “We display large menorahs around town, connecting with people where they are,” he explained.
The menorah lighting not only commemorates historical events but also carries deep symbolism for the Jewish community. The holiday celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days. “Every year, lighting the menorah signifies recognizing the potential within each human being,” Deitsch said.
For attendees like Linda Sylvester, participating in this event means sustaining cherished traditions. “I want to continue the practices I grew up with for my daughter and grandchildren,” she emphasized. Meanwhile, Dave, who does not identify as Jewish, relishes the opportunity to support his wife and indulge in traditional foods like latkes.
“It’s enjoyable, with eight days of gifts and family gatherings,” he remarked. “I love seeing the community come together, with families caring for one another.”
