Catalina State Park hosting annual New Year's Day hike

Arizona State Parks and Trails is set to kick off 2025 with a planned New Year’s Day hike in Catalina State Park, offering a serene experience for outdoor enthusiasts.

The guided exploration will feature the newly opened Cañada del Oro Ridge trail. Participants are invited to gather at the Catalina State Park Equestrian Center, near the horse corrals, starting at 9 a.m. on January 1.

This hike, measuring approximately 3.2 miles, is classified as “moderately difficult.” Hikers should prepare for rocky conditions and limited shade, according to the state parks department.

Since its inception 30 years ago, “First Day Hikes” have been a tradition across all 50 state park systems. This year, over a dozen Arizona state parks will offer similar guided hiking experiences.

During the hike, park rangers and volunteer guides will share insights into Arizona’s diverse plant life, geology, and rich regional history.

Participants are encouraged to bring sufficient water and wear appropriate footwear—sturdy, closed-toed shoes are recommended. Additionally, sunscreen and layering clothing will help tackle the fluctuating temperatures typical of Arizona winters.
