The Phoenix Metropolitan Area, often referred to as “The Valley” by locals, is the largest metropolitan area in the Southwest.
The Valley includes several major cities aside from Phoenix, such as:
- Mesa
- Chandler
- Scottsdale
- Tempe
- Glendale
- Surprise
- Peoria
- Gilbert
- El Mirage
- Avondale
- Litchfield Park
- Goodyear
- Buckeye
A city’s designation as being in the “East Valley” or “West Valley” depends on its location relative to Phoenix.
The Valley’s combined population stood at 4,845,832 people in the 2020 Census, making it the 11th largest metropolitan area in the United States, trailing just behind Boston and Atlanta.
Maricopa County, which encompasses the Phoenix area, is the fourth largest county in the U.S. by population, boasting 4,485,414 residents according to the 2020 Census.
The county represents about 63% of Arizona’s total population and covers 9,224 square miles, making it larger than seven U.S. states, including Rhode Island and New Jersey.
Maricopa County is also home to one of the largest park systems in the United States, featuring approximately 120,000 acres of open space parks, numerous trails, nature centers, and campgrounds.
The county seat is Phoenix, which also serves as the state capital and the fifth most populous city in the country based on census data.
Maricopa County derives its name from the Maricopa, or Piipaash, Native American Tribe.
