Woman, dog jump from second story apartment window to escape fire

Phoenix Fire Department confirmed that ten individuals have been displaced after a significant fire ravaged several apartments at a complex near 20th and Glendale Avenues.

The incident occurred on Christmas Eve morning, prompting emergency services to respond to reports of smoke around 9 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find flames consuming multiple units on the second floor.

It was disclosed that four apartments suffered extensive damage, leaving residents scrambling for alternative shelter during the holiday season.

Sylvia Ruiz, one of the affected residents, recounted the harrowing moments before fleeing her apartment. “I heard crackling and popping; at first, I thought someone was at my door,” she explained. When she opened the door, she was met with flames.

In a frantic effort, Ruiz grabbed her belongings and her dog, Tito. “I had no time to think—my focus was on saving my puppy,” she remarked. With the only staircase blocked by fire, she was forced to escape through a back window.

Neighbors rallied to assist her. “They told me to throw my dog down, and they caught me when I jumped,” Ruiz added, expressing relief that she and Tito emerged unscathed, despite feeling understandably shaken.

After the incident, Ruiz managed to return briefly to retrieve a few personal items, but much of her belongings were lost to the flames. “I could barely breathe because of the smoke; I only managed to grab my glasses and some papers,” she noted.

Lucky for them, all residents were able to evacuate safely without injuries. Ruiz expressed gratitude for her survival and that of her neighbors.

An investigation is underway to determine the fire’s cause. Meanwhile, the Phoenix Fire Department’s Crisis Response Team is working to assist those displaced, helping them find accommodations for the holiday weekend.
