Alleged chokehold incident leads to shooting death in Peoria home

PEORIA, Ariz. — A shooting on Saturday evening has left one man dead in Peoria, according to local police. Authorities identified the victim as 45-year-old Warren Honeywood.

The incident occurred at a residence near Olive and 83rd avenues. Police reports indicate that Honeywood sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman at the location called 911, claiming that her child’s father had been shot, but she was unaware of the assailant’s identity.

Upon arrival, officers found the woman providing aid to Honeywood, who was already deceased. She later informed the police that Honeywood had previously choked her before the altercation.

At the time of the incident, her 17-year-old son and 19-year-old cousin, identified as Joshua Mayfield-Chavez Jr., were present in the home. Officers discovered video footage capturing two males fleeing the area around the time of the shooting, although there was no definitive confirmation that they were inside the residence during the incident.

The woman was taken into custody after police determined there was insufficient evidence to suggest that anyone besides her, her 2-year-old son, and the victim were in the house during the shooting. After being read her rights, she suggested that investigators focus on her son and Mayfield-Chavez Jr.

Mayfield-Chavez Jr. asserted his right to legal counsel while the 17-year-old was willing to speak with investigators. He recounted that he and Mayfield-Chavez Jr. had heard arguing before finding Honeywood allegedly choking his mother.

According to court documents, Honeywood then appeared to reach for a weapon, prompting Mayfield-Chavez Jr. to allegedly shoot him. Evidence collected at the scene seemed to support the teenager’s account of events.

Mayfield-Chavez Jr. has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and other firearm-related offenses.
