Virtual Reality Injuries Surge by 352% in Just Four Years
As virtual reality (VR) devices gain popularity this holiday season, concerns over user safety are escalating. Despite the immersive entertainment they provide, injuries associated with their use are on the rise.
Recent research highlights a significant increase in ER visits due to VR-related injuries. Dr. Charles Hu, medical director of Dignity Health Chandler Regional’s Level I Trauma Center, notes that these devices are now commonplace, integrated into various sectors including law enforcement and entertainment.
“In 2017, there were about 125 reported cases of VR-related injuries,” Dr. Hu remarked. “Now, that number has surged to over 1,300, resulting in a staggering 352% increase.” The injuries predominantly involve fractures, lacerations, and sprains, with younger users facing a higher risk of facial injuries.
Dr. Hu emphasizes the importance of user caution. Space is critical when engaging with VR. “You need ample room to move freely; this minimizes the risk of accidents,” he advised.
As more users enter the VR market, raising awareness about safe usage practices is essential. “Here’s a fun gift, but play it safely,” Hu cautioned, stressing the need for responsible enjoyment of this technology.
Potential buyers are encouraged to consider these risks before gifting VR devices this holiday season. Understanding how to navigate the immersive experience can significantly reduce the likelihood of injury.
