Redneck Riviera, the Lake, and Ron

After the devastating lightning-caused wildfire in August, we decided to revisit Bartlett Lake. With our coffees in hand—a Macchiato and an Americano with cold half-and-half—we ventured down the reopened road. A stop at the Cave Creek Ranger Station offered a brief consolation, though it remained closed both outward and upon our return. What lay ahead was an expansive scene of destruction that left us momentarily speechless. However, we looked forward to meeting Alabama, who manages the Bartlett Lake Marina Store.

Alabama, originally from Louisiana, welcomed us warmly. Her experiences at Talladega and the picturesque Sugar Beach on what many affectionately call the Redneck Riviera added a layer of charm to our encounter. We first met months before the fires, bonding over our shared Southern roots and discussions about fishing. A sign above the register humorously stated, “No Fishing with Live Bait,” while just beside it sat a tank of lively minnows. To our surprise, these minnows were not intended for bait but were instead pets that provide fertilizer for Alabama’s plants. The store is meticulously organized, reflecting Alabama’s passion for her work, which was palpable during our visit. A 3×4-foot portrait of Bartlett Lake’s founders adorned the cash register, highlighting a community that is both resilient and welcoming.

For Alabama, the fires were nothing short of apocalyptic, leading to her evacuation twice, during which she took her minnows with her. Observing the aftermath, we noted the stark beauty of the scorched desert under the morning sun as we departed Bartlett Lake, now enhanced with an espresso machine.

Turning to the world of coffee art, our friend Ron, dubbed the “Karefree King of Koffee,” has cultivated a unique approach to barista creativity. Using a Breville machine as a tool, he crafts intricate designs atop his coffee cups, showcasing them on Instagram (@neurocyants). His portfolio spans over 600 images, including a striking rendition of the Eiffel Tower. Ron actively shares his skills with local baristas and coffee enthusiasts through workshops and demonstrations. This art form even stretches to popular coffee chains, where he inspires curious customers to order visually striking beverages. Don humorously mused that drinking one of Ron’s masterpieces would feel like sacrilege. We aim to feature one of his creations in each issue of The CUP, pending approval from our legal team. Ron can often be found at the Holland Center, enjoying life with his wife, or at the Organic Bread Bakery and Café next door, where Iwona juggles management and culinary delights. Feel free to share your thoughts with us at The CUP, [email protected].
