Trump Taps Controversial Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz as Attorney General Amid Ethics Investigation

Trump chooses Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, who is facing an ethics probe, as his attorney general

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention on Wednesday to nominate U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz for the position of attorney general. This unexpected choice comes amidst an ongoing congressional ethics investigation into Gaetz, a Florida Republican facing allegations of sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, and improprieties related to gifts.

House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed during a GOP press conference that Gaetz had submitted his resignation letter from the House of Representatives, effective immediately. “It caught us by surprise a little bit,” Johnson stated, explaining that Gaetz felt his numerous absences warranted his decision.

Florida law mandates an eight-week period for the governor to appoint a replacement. Johnson has already reached out to Governor Ron DeSantis, currently in Italy, to initiate this process. “If you do the math, we may be able to fill that seat on January 3,” he noted.

As attorney general, assuming he receives Senate approval, Gaetz would oversee the expansive U.S. Justice Department, which employs more than 115,000 individuals across 40 components.

This announcement arrives as special counsel Jack Smith concludes two significant investigations concerning Trump. One investigation tackles allegations of improperly handling classified documents, while the other focuses on efforts to undermine the 2020 election results. Historically, DOJ memos have suggested that prosecuting a sitting president may disrupt governmental functions.

Trump heralded Gaetz’s selection via social media, lauding him as a “deeply gifted and tenacious attorney” and a committed reformer. Gaetz echoed his enthusiasm, stating, “It will be an honor to serve as President Trump’s Attorney General!”

The House Ethics Committee is continuing its investigation, which has explored serious allegations against Gaetz since 2021. Although Gaetz has vehemently denied these accusations, the inquiry includes potential misconduct, special privileges granted based on personal relationships, and attempts to obstruct justice.

Rep. Michael Guest, chair of the House Ethics Committee, confirmed that confirmation of Gaetz as attorney general would eliminate the committee’s jurisdiction over the investigation. “Once we lose jurisdiction, no report will be issued,” he explained.

The nomination has drawn unexpected reactions from lawmakers. Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski expressed skepticism about Gaetz’s suitability, stating, “We need to have a serious attorney general.” Similarly, Maine’s Sen. Susan Collins noted the necessity for thorough questioning regarding Gaetz’s qualifications.

Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn acknowledged uncertainties around Gaetz, emphasizing the need for confirmation votes. Opposition from Senate Democrats is anticipated, with Pennsylvania’s Sen. John Fetterman highlighting the challenge Gaetz would face in securing support.

Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat from Connecticut, criticized Gaetz’s potential appointment, underscoring the need for moral integrity in the role of attorney general. “Matt Gaetz has none of those things,” he stated.

This developing story underscores the turbulent intersection of political appointments and ongoing legal scrutiny, as the Senate prepares for what promises to be a contentious confirmation process.
