Sheriff: Human remains found at White Tank Mountain

GLENDALE, Ariz. — On Sunday afternoon, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office received a report regarding potential human remains at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. A hiker discovered the remains around 1:30 p.m. and promptly contacted law enforcement.

Deputies arrived at the scene and confirmed the discovery. The sheriff’s office has since assigned its homicide unit to investigate the matter. No additional information has been released as the investigation is ongoing.

In related news, this incident follows other recent cases involving skeletal remains found in the greater Phoenix area, highlighting ongoing concerns about missing persons and unresolved cases.

The Phoenix Metropolitan Area, known locally as “The Valley,” is the largest metropolitan region in the Southwest. It comprises several key cities, including Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, and others.

According to the 2020 United States Census, the Valley’s population stands at approximately 4.8 million, ranking it as the 11th largest metropolitan area in the country, just behind Boston and Atlanta.

Maricopa County, home to Phoenix, ranks as the 4th largest county in the United States by population, with nearly 4.5 million residents. Covering an expansive area of 9,224 square miles, it contains around 63% of Arizona’s total population.

Notably, Maricopa County boasts one of the country’s most extensive park systems, featuring an estimated 120,000 acres of open space, hundreds of miles of trails, nature centers, and campgrounds.

The county is named after the Maricopa, or Piipaash, Native American tribe and serves as a significant cultural and geographical center in Arizona.
