Reps. Nguyen and Bliss Demand AG Mayes Launch Probe into Sedona’s Firearms Ordinance

By Daniel Stefanski |
In a bold move, two Arizona Republican lawmakers are challenging a local ordinance that they believe infringes on Second Amendment rights. State Representatives Quang Nguyen and Selina Bliss have taken their concerns over the City of Sedona’s Ordinance 12.30.090 to Attorney General Kris Mayes.
This ordinance prohibits the carrying of firearms in “any trail or open space area.” The lawmakers argue that it contradicts Arizona Revised Statutes § 13-3108, which they say renders the ordinance “invalid and unenforceable.” Their communication follows previous outreach to Sedona’s Mayor Scott Jablow and city council, urging a review of the regulation’s legality.
Nguyen stated, “The City of Sedona has had ample time to address these concerns and has chosen not to act. We are left with no choice but to seek the Attorney General’s involvement to ensure the rule of law is followed.” The pair’s frustration stems from a lack of response from the city regarding their legal analysis request.
In their letter to Mayes, Nguyen and Bliss noted that Sedona has not remedied the ordinance’s legal flaws. They have asked the Attorney General to conduct a review and provide a written report within 30 days, as required by state law. The lawmakers suggest that should a violation be found, a special action in the state’s Supreme Court may be necessary to resolve the issue.
Nguyen and Bliss have made a name for themselves as staunch defenders of Second Amendment rights. Both have received the “Legislator of the Year” award from the Arizona Citizens Defense League for their unwavering advocacy. With an eye on the upcoming legislative session, they plan to continue their efforts to protect Arizonans’ constitutional rights in a politically divided landscape.
