Lewis deals fatal blow to Cavanaugh’s ‘symbolic’ last resort

Pinal County Recorder Dana Lewis attended a special meeting of the Board of Supervisors on October 9, 2024, where developments related to her role were discussed. As of now, unofficial projections from InMaricopa suggest that Lewis will retain her position, having garnered an impressive 97% of the votes from the 142,541 ballots cast. A total of 102,682 votes have been tallied.

In contrast, the write-in candidates collectively received just 2,204 votes. It is widely assumed that most of these votes were for Supervisor Kevin Cavanaugh, who pursued Lewis’s seat after suffering a significant loss in the county sheriff primary election.

Cavanaugh, declaring his candidacy “largely symbolic,” formally registered as a write-in candidate for the office in August. In his communication to the county elections department, he suggested that the intent behind his candidacy was to urge election workers to engage in manual ballot counting.

Despite openly acknowledging that write-in candidates rarely succeed, Cavanaugh pointed to sensational claims, alleging widespread election fraud. He claimed that significant electoral irregularities could only be substantiated through scandals commensurate with serious misconduct by incumbents.

Throughout 2024, Cavanaugh devoted considerable effort to challenging Lewis’s integrity and casting doubt on the electoral process, including promoting conspiracy theories in a lengthy, self-published critique of the primary election.

Dana Lewis was appointed Recorder by the Pinal County Board of Supervisors in 2022 following the resignation of her predecessor, Virginia Ross, who shifted to the role of Elections Director. As the results continue to unfold, neither Lewis nor Cavanaugh has provided immediate comments regarding the election.
