LOS ANGELES — Tony Todd, the versatile actor renowned for his role as the hook-wielding “Candyman,” has passed away at the age of 69. His death was confirmed by various media sources on Wednesday, with the cause still unannounced.

Todd’s legacy is deeply embedded in the horror genre. He is best known for his chilling portrayal of Candyman in the 1992 film and its sequels. This character, a vengeful spirit summoned through a specific incantation, captivated audiences and defined Todd’s career for nearly thirty years.

However, his talents extended far beyond horror. Todd’s impressive portfolio includes over 100 film and television roles. He made his cinematic debut in Oliver Stone’s “Platoon” (1986) and subsequently gained recognition in the 1990 remake of “Night of the Living Dead.” He also portrayed William Bludworth in the popular “Final Destination” series. At the time of his passing, Todd was actively filming “Final Destination: Bloodlines” in Vancouver.

In addition to his film work, Todd made significant contributions to the science fiction genre. He appeared in several “Star Trek” series, notably as Kurn, Worf’s brother. His distinctive voice also landed him various voice acting roles, including Darkseid in the DC Animated Movie Universe.

Born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C., Todd spent his formative years in Hartford, Connecticut. He pursued theater studies at the University of Connecticut and further honed his skills at the Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute and Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island.

As a committed stage actor, Todd showcased his talent both on and off Broadway, earning a Helen Hayes nomination for his performance in Athol Fugard’s “The Captain’s Tiger.” His contributions to theater included notable works such as August Wilson’s “King Hedley II” and “Aida” on Broadway.
