Orphaned squirrel who became social media star was euthanized after being seized from home

PINE CITY, N.Y. — Peanut, a squirrel who gained fame on social media, was euthanized after authorities seized him from his caretaker’s home. This incident has sparked a wave of heartbreak among the animal’s followers. The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) took action following anonymous complaints that alleged potential risks to public health.

On Wednesday, the DEC officers also seized a raccoon named Fred from Mark Longo’s residence near the Pennsylvania border, which he operates as an animal sanctuary. According to Longo, the agency’s decision was prompted by concerns about rabies exposure, especially after a person was bitten by Peanut.

Both animals were euthanized to test for rabies, as confirmed by the DEC and the Chemung County Department of Health. “On Oct. 30, DEC seized a raccoon and a squirrel sharing a residence with humans, creating the potential for human exposure to rabies,” the agencies stated. They further advised anyone who interacted with the animals to seek medical advice.

Peanut had developed a significant online presence, amassing a devoted following across Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms. Longo had taken Peanut in after witnessing the squirrel’s mother being struck by a vehicle in New York City seven years ago. Peanut’s social media accounts showcased his playful antics, including jumping through hoops and wearing costumes.

In an emotional Instagram post, Longo expressed his sorrow over Peanut’s death. “It is with profound sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news: on October 30th, the DEC made the devastating decision to euthanize our beloved Peanut and Fred,” the post read. This announcement was accompanied by a touching video montage of the animals interacting with their caretakers.

In April 2023, Longo and his wife Daniela established the P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, which currently houses around 300 animals. Longo mentioned he was in the process of certifying Peanut as an educational animal when the seizure occurred, leaving him devastated by the abrupt end of Peanut’s life.
