North Korea Unveils New Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Test

SEOUL, South Korea — In a significant show of military capability, North Korea successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday, marking its first such test in nearly a year. This development raises concerns about the potential implications for U.S. homeland security and regional stability.
The launch occurred amid U.S. warnings that North Korean troops, reportedly donning Russian military uniforms, are en route to Ukraine to augment Russian forces. This troubling scenario suggests North Korea may be stepping up its involvement in the ongoing conflict. The missile test coincides with the lead-up to the U.S. election, possibly indicating an intent to capture American attention.
According to North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the launch was ordered by leader Kim Jong Un. The agency reported that the missile’s flight exceeded all previous records logged during prior tests, showcasing advances in missile technology.
During the test, Kim was present and reportedly described the launch as “an appropriate military action” reflecting North Korea’s resolve against perceived threats. U.S. National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett condemned the launch, calling it “a flagrant violation” of several U.N. Security Council resolutions. He emphasized that the U.S. will take necessary measures to ensure the safety of its homeland and allies, South Korea and Japan.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff indicated that the weapon could be a new, solid-fueled long-range ballistic missile. Solid-fueled missiles have advantages in mobility and quicker launch capabilities compared to their liquid-fueled counterparts. JCS spokesperson Lee Sung Joon noted the strategic timing of the test, suggesting it might strengthen North Korea’s future negotiating position.
Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani characterized the missile’s flight duration of 86 minutes and maximum altitude exceeding 7,000 kilometers as unprecedented, potentially indicative of a new missile type. Both South Korea and Japan expressed strong condemnation of the launch, labeling it a direct threat to international peace.
South Korea’s military plans to conduct robust bilateral exercises with the U.S., as well as trilateral exercises involving Japan, in response to the missile test. The missile appears to have been launched from a 12-axle vehicle, suggesting it may be part of a new mobile platform the North disclosed last September.
While North Korea has made advancements in missile technology, many experts surmise that it has not yet achieved a reliable nuclear-armed missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. The country reportedly possesses short-range missiles capable of striking South Korea, but challenges remain in ensuring missile reentry capabilities.
Intelligence suggests North Korea may soon attempt another long-range missile test and is preparing for a seventh nuclear test. The last ICBM test occurred in December 2023 with the launch of the Hwasong-18, indicating ongoing development efforts.
The geopolitical landscape is more complex, with North Korea potentially sending thousands of troops to assist Russia in Ukraine. This shift in military strategy raises alarms for South Korea, the U.S., and their allies who worry about the technologies North Korea could acquire in return for such support—possibly advanced missile systems, Russian fighter jets, and modernization assistance for its conventional forces.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin described the troop movements as dangerous, with a high likelihood that these forces would be utilized in combat. This concern underscores the rising tensions as South Korea considers supplying weapons to Ukraine while remaining vigilant against North Korean actions.
South Korean military intelligence has reported that over 11,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia, with around 3,000 positioned near active conflict zones. This development signals a possible shift in the balance of military power in the region and adds complexity to the ongoing situations in Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula.
