Man Charged with Terrorism for Shooting at Democratic Campaign Office

PHOENIX — Jeffrey Michael Kelly, 60, has been indicted on serious charges after multiple shooting incidents targeting a Valley Democratic campaign office. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced the indictment, which includes one count of terrorism and several firearm-related felonies.

Law enforcement reported that the campaign office in Tempe was struck by gunfire three times between September 16 and October 6. Authorities state that Kelly initially used a CO2 powered gun before escalating to firearms for subsequent attacks. Over these incidents, he reportedly fired more than twenty shots, damaging the building’s windows, doors, and walls significantly.

The grand jury’s decision comes amid concerns about Kelly’s potential threat to public safety. Prosecutors emphasized, “It’s the state’s belief that Mr. Kelly poses the most extreme danger within a democracy and within our community.” This statement was made during a court hearing where they articulated the severity of his actions aimed at disrupting political activities.

Investigators uncovered a disturbing arsenal at Kelly’s residence, including more than 120 guns and over 250,000 rounds of ammunition. This discovery raised alarms that he may have been planning a mass casualty event.
