Students were evacuated from Desert Sunrise High School on October 24, 2024, due to exposure to acid fumes in a science classroom. The incident drew a swift response from local police and fire crews, who arrived at the school around 10:24 a.m.
Witnesses reported seeing students assembled in the school parking lot by 11 a.m. As concerns escalated, DSHS Principal Phil Verdugo promptly informed parents via email about the situation. He noted that the exposure occurred when students were not wearing masks, despite the quick action taken to ventilate the classroom.
The email further explained that fumes from salicylic acid can lead to mild respiratory irritation. Symptoms might include coughing, throat irritation, and watery eyes. Principal Verdugo urged parents to monitor their children for any signs of breathing difficulty in the following 24 hours.
For parents worried about their child’s health, the school suggested contacting healthcare providers for guidance. Maricopa Fire and Medical crews cleared the scene by 11:36 a.m. and confirmed there was no lasting hazard, allowing students to return to their classrooms.
Fortunately, no students required hospitalization, and all reported symptoms were deemed minor. However, some students chose to leave with their parents after the incident.
