African American Leaders in Arizona Address Voting Challenges Ahead of Key Elections

As Arizona approaches the 2024 presidential election, the focus is shifting to the African American community and the issues they prioritize.

In Phoenix, industry leaders like Anthony Gathers, owner of Ageez Barber Shop, are making significant efforts to educate voters. He has taken it upon himself to engage his clients in discussions about the importance of voting.

“We need to have more conversations with the youth about voting,” Gathers stated. Many young individuals express skepticism about the importance of their vote. Gathers aims to change that narrative by addressing concerns within the community.

Key issues for Gathers include the affordability of essential medications like insulin and access to affordable housing. He pointed out the rising costs of homes, referencing Vice President Kamala Harris’s initiatives aimed at assisting first-time homebuyers.

“The time to get informed is now,” Gathers urged. He invoked the legacy of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, urging all to recognize the struggle that enabled them to vote. “Vote for the candidates who will support your family and your community,” he emphasized.

Christian Lamar, a former Arizona GOP executive, shared a different perspective. A staunch supporter of Donald Trump, he cited past accomplishments under Trump’s administration, such as border security and economic improvements. “World leaders respected the U.S. under his leadership,” Marc said.

For Lamar, the top issues include election integrity, immigration, and free speech. He expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the GOP in upcoming elections, predicting a possible victory for Kamala Harris in 2024 due to perceived deficiencies within the party.

“The manner in which ballots are handled will be crucial,” Lamar noted. He encouraged individuals to participate in the political process well ahead of the election timeline. “Engagement shouldn’t just happen at the last minute,” he stressed.

As the election date closes in, both Gathers and Lamar exemplify the diverse views that shape Arizona’s political landscape, highlighting the importance of voter engagement within their communities.
