'He always did his best': Phoenix man killed in bus crash dedicated his life to provide for his children, family says

George Meletis, 59, tragically lost his life in a shuttle bus accident early Monday morning, police report. The incident occurred at a transport depot near 79th Avenue and Van Buren Street, where he was employed as a safety trainer.

His children, Athanasios Meletis and Rebecca Ziesmer, fondly remember him as a devoted and caring father. “He always did his best, no matter what,” Athanasios reflected on his father’s commitment to the family.

The siblings recalled their childhood in Mesa, emphasizing their father’s relentless work ethic. He often labored long hours but never failed to spend quality time with them. “He would cook for us, if we wanted he’d play with us — whatever we wanted to do,” Ziesmer said. Their father’s dedication to make them feel loved was paramount, even if it meant sacrificing time at home.

In hindsight, both children convey a deeper understanding of their father’s sacrifices now that they are parents themselves. “Now that I got a little bit older, the biggest thing that I can say to him is, I get it,” Athanasios shared. Regretfully, they wish they could express this sentiment to him personally.

Details surrounding the fatal accident indicate that two individuals were aboard the shuttle bus when the incident occurred. According to police, the driver reportedly removed his foot from the brake, causing the bus to accelerate unexpectedly. Investigators continue to probe the circumstances, as no arrests have been made.

The news of their father’s death came as a shock, leaving the family grappling with immense grief. “It’s not news that you expect to hear randomly on a phone,” Ziesmer remarked after rushing back to Phoenix to support one another during this crisis.

As they navigate this devastating loss, the Meletis family is committed to being there for one another, reflecting the love and support George provided throughout his life. “We made this drive together, and we’re gonna do it together,” Athanasios stated, emphasizing the importance of family unity in tough times.
