A teenager allegedly assaulted his mother and subsequently injured a police officer during a disturbance in Maricopa on October 1. The suspect, Jakwon M. Joyner, 19, now faces multiple assault charges, one of which is aggravated.

According to a probable cause statement issued by the Maricopa Police Department, officers responded to reports of a disturbance at an apartment complex located on West Bowlin Road at approximately 2:35 p.m. Following the incident, crisis representatives advised that Joyner would require involuntary evaluation and treatment for mental health issues. He was placed in protective custody by the responding officers.

As police escorted Joyner outside, he allegedly kicked his mother, leading officers to restrain him to the ground in an effort to de-escalate the situation. Despite being restrained, he reportedly continued to resist, kicking and scratching officers. This altercation resulted in injuries to one officer’s hand.

Joyner was subsequently placed in a squad car and transported to Pinal County Jail. He now faces potential sentences totaling up to seven and a half years if convicted of the charges.
