Democrats Aim to Dethrone Sole Republican on Pima County Supervisors Board

Pima County’s District 4 has a longstanding history of Republican dominance, dating back to the early 1970s. This year, Democrat Vanessa Bechtol is challenging incumbent Steve Christy in hopes of shifting the political landscape. Christy is pursuing a third term in the upcoming election set for Nov. 5.
The district, which encompasses Tucson’s East Side, Mount Lemmon, Vail, and portions of Saguaro National Park, leans Republican. Voter registration statistics reveal that 36 percent of constituents are registered with the GOP, while 31 percent are Democrats and the remaining 33 percent identify as independents.

During a recent forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson, the candidates clarified their stark differences on multiple issues. Christy indicated his enjoyment of the debate and emphasized the clear choices voters will face in the election.
The two candidates diverged significantly on topics such as early childhood education funding, mining operations in the Santa Rita Mountains, election integrity, and abortion rights. Christy has consistently voted against funding for the Pima Early Education Program Scholarships (PEEPS), which assists low-income families in securing preschool education for their children.
Since its inception in 2021, PEEPS has aided over 1,900 children by utilizing federal American Rescue Plan funds alongside local support. Christy maintains that the program disproportionately benefits a small demographic and claims the benefits of early education are overstated.
Conversely, Bechtol argues the program is crucial for both child development and supporting working families. She insists that investing in early childhood education strengthens the community and enhances future opportunities for children.
Another contentious issue is the Rosemont Copper mining proposal in the Santa Rita Mountains. While the project has faced delays due to legal challenges, Rosemont is advancing plans for mining on the west side of the mountain. Christy supports these endeavors, highlighting the historical significance of copper mining to Arizona’s economy.
In stark contrast, Bechtol cites concerns from local residents about potential environmental harms and economic consequences of the mining operation, including water pollution and diminished property values. Reminding attendees of her predecessor’s opposition, she warns against unsafe mining practices that could threaten the tourism sector.
On election integrity, Bechtol has criticized Christy’s votes against certifying Pima County’s election results, insisting on the importance of upholding democratic processes. Christy, however, underscores his reservations about electoral procedures in broader contexts.
Regarding abortion, although Pima County has limited regulatory power, Bechtol champions accessibility and supports initiatives like the Abortion Access Act. Christy, on the other hand, has voiced firm opposition to such measures.
When it comes to gun safety, Bechtol advocates for expanded background checks and restrictions on assault weapons, while Christy respectfully disagrees. These various stances reflect broader national discussions on safety and rights.
Financially, Bechtol has outpaced Christy in fundraising efforts. Reports show she raised $43,682 in the second quarter, totaling $50,481 overall. Christy raised significantly less, with just $3,170 in the same period.
The political climate in District 4 has evolved, with recent elections showing a trend toward Democratic support. Consultant Adam Kinsey highlights the success of prior Democratic candidates, suggesting that change may be attainable in the upcoming election.
As the campaign progresses, both candidates will need to address these pressing issues to secure the vital support of District 4 voters.
