Man Struck and Killed by Pickup Truck in Self-Defense Incident, Police Report
PHOENIX — In a troubling incident early Saturday morning, a driver fatally ran over a man at a gas station in Phoenix, but authorities have deemed the act one of self-defense. The Phoenix Police Department reported that the incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. at the intersection of 35th Avenue and Union Hills Drive.
Upon arrival, officers discovered 35-year-old Kyle Dorman severely injured after being struck by a pickup truck. The vehicle had fled the scene, prompting a swift response from law enforcement, which included aerial assistance.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, noting an exchange of gunfire between several individuals prior to Dorman being hit. He was immediately transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
The driver of the pickup was located after aerial surveillance, leading to a subsequent stop and the apprehension of the vehicle’s occupants. Initial investigations indicated that a disagreement erupted between the occupants of the truck and another group in the parking lot, escalating to violence and gunfire.
Details emerged that Dorman brandished a firearm during the confrontation, prompting the driver to accelerate and strike him. Additional gunfire was exchanged as the truck departed, but fortunately, no other persons were reportedly injured.
Following the incident, police stated that the driver has been released from custody, with their self-defense assertion aligning with the evidence collected. However, authorities caution that formal charges could still be considered pending the complete investigation.
As the situation continues to unfold, further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
